Recruitment and Employment
The firm consider all employees to be equal and create a working environment which is free from unlawful discrimination. This applies equally to voluntary positions and anyone undertaking work experience within the firm. This will, for example, include arrangements for employment, recruitment and selection, terms and conditions of employment, access to training opportunities, conditions of service, access to promotion and transfers, grievance and disciplinary processes, dress code, work allocation and any other employment related activities.
The firm actively considers the making of reasonable workplace adjustments to ensure that staff members with a disability, vulnerability or particular need are fully supported and are not put at a substantial disadvantage compared to other staff.
Further, as a firm regulated by the SRA, Joseph James Law collect and report workforce diversity data about the diversity make-up of their workforce annually.
Recruitment will be carried out fairly and staff will be recruited based on their skills, suitability for the job role and their levels of professional conduct. As it is the firm’s aim to encourage, value and manage diversity and it is committed to equality for its entire staff, it strives to attain a workforce that is representative of the communities from which it is drawn.
Client
As a provider of legal services, the firm will treat all clients equally and fairly and not unlawfully discriminate against them. It will also, wherever possible, take steps to promote equal opportunity in relation to access to the legal services that it provides, taking account of the diversity of the communities that it serves.
The firm takes account, in particular, the needs of clients with a disability and clients who are unable to communicate effectively in English. In particular, the firm makes reasonable adjustments to ensure that clients with a disability, vulnerability or particular need are not placed at a substantial disadvantage and do not pass on the costs of adjustments to these clients. The firm considers whether particular groups are predominant within its client base and, where possible, ensures that their needs are met.
The firm will not refuse to deal with any client based on their age, race, religion/belief, sex, sexual orientation, disability status or any other protected characteristic. Similarly, the firm will not allow clients to choose their expert based around any of the protected characteristics under the Equality Act 2010. Experts should be selected based on their suitability for the clients’ needs, skills, ability and experience.
Third Parties and Experts
The firm do not unlawfully discriminate in dealings with experts and third parties. All experts and third parties are instructed from a register of experts and have been assessed by the firm as being capable of meeting both the firm’s and its clients’ requirements. Experts and third parties are instructed because they satisfy the firm’s selection criteria.
Complaints
The firm will take seriously any complaint raised from a claim of discrimination whether this be from an employee, client or third-party, and, anyone who makes such a claim, will be protected against victimisation. Any employee, client or third-party who feels they have been discriminated against should put their complaint in writing to Managing Direct, Andrew Settle.
I had the mis fortune to need Legal advice over an employment issue right at the start of the Covid 19 outbreak/lock down period. I had previously heard of JJL though an event that they run annually so thought why not give them a go. The service I received was excellent the whole team were attentive and explained all of the legal details in plain English. Within a week or so my issue was resolved successfully which given the current state of the country I was super impressed with. I would have no hesitation in recommending their services to anyone in need of legal advice.
